Before the Spanish arrived in Costa Rica the area of Limón was inhabited by the indigenous groups called: Huétares, Suerres, Pococies, Tariacas, Viecitas and Terbis. Columbus came to the province the 18th of September 1502 when he arrived at the Uvita Island. During the second half of the 17th Century, people started growing Cocoa in the Valley of Matina. By 1871 the construction of the railroad began and right after that the plantation of bananas. In 1964 began the construction of a crude oil refinery and in 1979 the Province inaugurated their Port at Moín.

General Description

The name of the Province comes from a Lemon Tree that was found in front of the governor's office which was unique of its class. The principal activities of the area are banana and palmoil production as well as pejibaye, cocoa, bamboo, beans, fruits, coconuts and some cattle farming and fishing.

Interesting Sites

One of the most interesting sites of Costa Rica is Tortuguero. A system of natural lagoons and navigable channels also called the Costa Ricas Amazons. It hosts the Tortuguero National Park and is a must for any tourist interested in Flora, Fauna and Turtles.

Climate

The climate is warm, and humid. The seasons are somehow different as in the rest of the country. Which makes the area a beautiful alternative for the months September and October, when it rains a lot in the rest of the country but not necessarily so in Limón. The average daytime temperatures are between 25 and 30 Degrees Celsius The nights are cool and refreshing. The constant breeze from the Atlantic Ocean helps, that there are no extreme temperatures during the different seasons. All this applies to the regions near sealevel. The mountains ( up to 10'000 ft, 3'000m ) are cool.
